Poyang Lake Nature Reserve
The biggest freshwater lake in China, the Poyang Lake lies at the foot of the Lushan Mountain in southern Jiujiang City in Jiangxi Province. Poyang (鄱阳) Lake Nature Reserve covers a total area of 22,400 hectares. Its protection targets are white cranes, egrets and other rare birds. It has been listed as a Wetland of International Importance.

The Reserve provides shelter for a million birds of 258 species, of which over 40 such as egrets, white cranes, white-crown cranes, great bustards, golden eagles and swans are put under the first-grade and second-grade state protection. It is known as the world's largest nature reserve for white cranes to live through the winter. It is estimated that 95% of the white cranes in the world fly here to escape the winter cold. As a natural habitat for migratory birds in the world to spend their winter, the Poyang Lake Reserve is an important centre for the protection and research of birds.
