Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
A treasury of animal resources, its main peak Steep Fan is still a unconquered.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain(玉龙雪山)
The mountain chain is snowcapped year round in the nearest equator of the Northern Hemisphere, located 15 kilometers away from the north side of Lijiang River Its name comes from its snowcapped peak that glitters like a jade dragon lying on the top of the mountain.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is famous for its danger, beauty and strangeness. The chief scenic areas on the mountain are spruce plain, white-water river, the Ganhaizi Lake and ice-tower forest. It serves as a multi-purpose tour resort that combines sightseeing, mountain climbing, exploration, and science research.
The spruce plain is located about one kilometer east of the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and is surrounded by the thousand year old spruce trees. The green grasslands are home to sheep, shepherds, as well as minority group settlements.
In the white-water river area features a deep valley with trees, clear springs and streams. Because of the change in terrain, some springs and streams converge into ponds and some become waterfalls. However, there are also car lots, dining halls, shopping malls and the cable car station for in and out the spruce plain.
The Ganhaizi Lake is large grassland east of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and is a large natural herding land. Originally, "Ganhaizi" in Tibetan means "lake" and "Ganhaizi" is the dry lake. Every spring and summer, the green grass becomes shaded and many flowers blooming turning the vast grassland into a garden.
Nowadays there are skiing mountain resorts for spending holidays and a large-scale cable car going up near the glaciers of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. You can take the cable cars to the snowfield to appreciate ten thousand years of snow, the marvelous spectacle of the ice tower and go skiing.
The chief peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is uniquely named "the Fan Steep". The Fan Steep has an elevation of 5,596, while jade dragon’s thirteen peaks range to the south and north like a flying dragon.
The mountain is not only of momentous size, changes its landscapes following the seasons and even in the course of a single day, from sunrise to sunset, the beautiful scenery on the snowcapped mountain is continually transformed. Each plant area has its own unique vegetation because the terrain of the mountain extends from south to north and the plants on the mountain are distributed according to different climates and elevation.
