Department of Pathology
The Department of Pathology of Fourth Military Medical University was established in 1954. The Department has offered the Master degree in Medicine since 1978 and the Doctoral degree of Philosophy or Medicine since 1986. The Department of Pathology has become the post-doctoral course station of Basic Medicine in 1991. The Department is one of the national "211 Project" priority disciplines and one of the "Cheung Kong scholar programme" disciplines. The Department became one of the National Key Departments of P.R China in 2002.

Research fields:

1. To study the relationship between viruses and carcinogenesis. The study of the relationship between Hepatitis viruses ( B, C) and hepatocellular carcinoma began in the 1960's. It has received a State Award for Science and technology progress (second prize,1999). The studies on correlations between Epstein-Barr virus ( EBV ) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma and on the relationship between cytomegalovirus and Hodgkin's lymphoma began in the 1990's. The former study has successfully produced an animal model of EBV carcinogenesis and an interesting finding was reported in J Cancer Res Clinical Oncol (1998). The latter has identified cytomegalovirus genes and antigens in neoplastic cells of Epstein-Barr virus negative Hodgkin's lymphoma for the first time( Int J Oncol,2002 ).
2. To study tumor immunotherapy and genetherapy: This study emphasizes the preparation of tumor rejection antigen peptide vaccine and gene vaccine. Monoclonal antibodies against hepatocellular carcinoma and their engineered single chain antibodies with fusion proteins were prepared.
3. Cancer genome research: This study focuses on the cloning and functional study of novel genes related to cancer cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis and the signal transduction study of brain cancer.

There are 7 professors, 5 associate professors and 10 lecturers in the department. The Department of Pathology is responsible for the teaching of General Pathology to third, fifth, and seventh year medical students, also for teaching postgraduates (MSc and PhD) Molecular Pathology, Immunohistochemistry, Basis of Oncology a nd Surgical Pathology. As of 2000, the Department has completed the training of 137 postgraduates including 56 PhDs candidates. The Department of Pathology is also responsible for the surgical pathology at Xijing Hospital and deals with the diagnoses of over 16000 biopsied or operated cases, 7000 cytology cases and more than 1000 difficult cases for consultation every year. Several novel entities of cancer have been reported in China by this department for the first time. There are 10 laboratories in the Department. With the large volumes of clinical materials encountered, research is conducted using several advanced techniques including immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular biology methods.
