East China University of Science&Technology

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), initially named East China Institute of Chemical Technology, was founded in 1952. It was the first single-subject chemical institute in China through the joint consolidation of the chemical departments from Jiaotong University, ZhendanUniversity, Datong University, Dongwu University and Jiangnan University during a nation-wide restructuring of the country’s higher education resource in the early 1950’s. As one of the universities that were initially granted the permission to admit postgraduates in 1956, ECUST was promoted as a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education in 1960. In recognition of its growth, the Education Ministry approved the renaming of the University to the East China University of Science and Technology in 1993. In June 1996, ECUST was selected as one of the top 100 universities in China for the national "211 Project". ECUST is under the joint construction and administration of Shanghai Government and the State Ministry of Education from October 1997. In June 2000, the graduate school of ECUST was approved by the Ministry of Education of China and then became one of the first twenty-two universities under the Self-admission revolution program in China. With its subsequent development and construction, the University gradually expanded into a multi-disciplinary national key university including engineering, science, business, management, administration, humanities and law.

ECUST has three campuses now, one in Xuhui District, and another in Jinshan District and another in Fengxian District which is located in the region of Shanghai Touring bay and still under construction. As one of Shanghai’s Garden Units, the university has beautiful campuses, occupying an area of more than1.768 million square meters in total with elegant environment and greenery sceneries. Buildings on campuses cover about 513 thousand square meters, including some standard physical training establishments like gymnasium, swimming pool and plastic ground track field and so on. The university library possesses 2.1 million books, 17 thousand kinds of periodical, some 20 kinds of CD data-base like CA & EI and the complete American patent minimized films. ECUST is the head of information cooperation networks among Academics of Chemical Technology around China, the Shanghai branch of Beijing Library CD Information Center, the Workstation of Scientific Program Consultation and Innovation Investigation Center of the Education Ministry, the Center of Foreign Language Textbooks in Shanghai etc. The Analyzing & Testing Center and Jewellery Inspecting Center boast national authorized computation & attestation centers.

The university has 16 Academic Schools at present, namely School of Chemical Engineering, School of Petrochemical Technology, School of Bioengineering, School of Chemistry & Pharmaceutics, School of Medicines, School of Material Science & Engineering, School of Information Science and Engineering, School of Software & Information Administration, School of Mechanical & Power Engineering, School of Resource & Environment Engineering, School of Science, School of Business, School of Social & Public Administration, School of Art-Designing & Mass media, School of Foreign Languages and School of Sino-German Engineering. Besides, it also has School of Online Education, School of Adult Education and School of International Education (Under Construction), Union of Excellent Students in Science and Technology, School of Literae Humaniores and a Physical Education Department.

Academic fields of ECUST cover eleven branches and forty-three subjects. The university now has 54 specialties for undergraduate studies, and it is entitled to confer master’s degrees in 121 programs, doctoral degrees in 43 programs, Engineering Master Degrees in 16 programs as well as the MBA program, MPA program, Normal Degree program for College Teachers and 5 post-doctoral centers. Chemical Engineering boasts the key specialty of Shanghai as well as key specialty of China; and Material Science & Engineering boasts the key specialty of Shanghai. There is a national curricula base on Engineering Chemistry.

At present, the total number of full time students has reached over 20,000 including _page-14,100 undergraduates, 5,550 postgraduates for master's degrees and 783 Ph.D. candidates and 220 students for higher professional education; Furthermore, there are 19,000 students in both School of Adult Education and School of Online Education seeking bachelor’s degree.

Among its over 3,900 staff members and workers, there are 4 full-time members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and another18 par-time members, 3 scientists-in-chief of Project 973 in China, 7 Changjiang Chair Professors, 10 national excellent scholars, 5 gainers of the Fund of National Outstanding Young Scientists, 11 gainers of the Fund of National Excellent Young Teacher, over 1,000 full professors and associate professors. Besides, more and more young scholars are striding on their way to prosperity, among them 4 being granted Scientific Elites of Shanghai, 1 being granted youth of outstanding ability of Shanghai, 6 being selected as candidates in the Program of Outstanding Talents in the 21st Century, 3 being selected as first national candidates in the Program of Million-Talents in the 21st Century.

With the enterprise-oriented objective of “to fully improve the students’ integrity ability and to cultivate the students’ innovation ability”, ECUST has been trying to deepen its educational philosophy, contents, methodology and the improvement of curricula system which enable ECUST to rank first among the universities in Shanghai for its high-quality teaching. There are 4 National Classic Courses and another 24 Shanghai Classic Courses in ECUST. 83 programs are granted the Teaching Award of Shanghai University and another 11 programs are granted the National Teaching Award since 1997. 60 kinds of textbooks are awarded National Excellent Textbooks and Provincial Excellent Textbooks since 1996. Over the past years, students of ECUST have ranked the first among the other universities both in Shanghai and around the country for many times in the national and international mathematics exams competitions. Especially in 1997 and 2005, the students of ECUST got the top special grade in the American College Students Mathematics Competition relatively. Meanwhile, the students’ grades rank high in other kinds of National and Shanghai competitions, namely Physical, Foreign Language, Computer Programming, Electronic Designing, Robot Inventing and Scientific Inventions.

The university has a Science and Technology Zone which includes 53 academic institutes, 8 national academic bases and 12 provincial research bases. ECUST is among one of the six universities that are firstly authorized as the national technology transference centers. In recent years, 800 full-time and part-time researchers in ECUST have been conducting more than 800 research programs each year with their research fund rising from 100 million RMB in 2001 to 200 million in 2004 and to 250 million in 2005. Among more than 5,000 research programs from 1980 to 2005, 550 of them have been awarded, including 39 National Invention Awards and National Science Advancement Awards, 460 Provincial Science Advancement Awards and 480 Overseas Patents. New techniques are created here, namely the gasification of water, coal and plasm, ethanol obtaining from fibrin rejectamenta, resource-gaining by smog desulfurization, advanced evaporation of water, chlorine and stone, invention platform of microorganism albumen in large scale etc. A lot of new techniques have been industrialized and made great lucrative and social profits, including GMT compound material, fine carbon, manmade bone cement, SO2 reusing, dry coal powder-gasification, new self-control zymolysising kettle.

ECUST has attached great importance to international cooperation and communication and have established long term academic communication relationship with more than 60 universities , enterprises and research institutes in America, Japan, France, Germany, Canada, Korea and Australia.

The university has been striving to enhance the Party Construction and Spiritual Civilization Construction and advance the overall cultivation of students’ integrity ability along with the Successful Material Civilization Construction. ECUST once took the lead in “Double Courses” reforming, which resulted in the first place award of Shanghai as well as National Excellent Teaching Achievements, and which in turn resulted in a series of five years the first place award and excellent organization award in the competition of Den Xiaoping’ theory studies of Shanghai. Great achievements are made in the construction of campus environment, innovation of educational system and the improvement of integrity educational advantages. Consequently a lot of Shanghai as well as National Excellent Students, Outstanding Communities and Civilized Dormitories are springing out every year. All kinds of Honors have been granted to the university, namely the Excellent Organizing Award of Shanghai in the National College Student Art Festival, the Excellent Organizing Award of National Social Activity for College Students, the Model of Collective Working Unit in Shanghai, The Outstanding Unit of Arts Education in Shanghai, Model Unit for Supporting the Military and Their Families, the Outstanding Unit of Social Security in Shanghai, the National Outstanding Unit of People’s Physical Education, the Outstanding Unit of Democratic Administration, the Civilized Unit of Shanghai for five years since 1996.

Over70, 000 Students has graduated from ECUST since it was founded; nine of them have been selected as the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering; and more others have become the leaders in all levels of governments; and also many have become the outstanding and advanced experts in universities, scientific institutes and some backbone companies.

ECUST is striving forward to build an internationally preeminent, brilliantly characteristic, multi-disciplinary and research-oriented first-class university.
