Pudong International Airport
Pudong International Airport, located in Airport Town in eastern Pudong and near seaside of Zhu Bridge, is 30 km from the city proper and 40 km from Hongqiao International Airport with a total area of 40 sq. km. The first phase of construction project started in October 1997, and in September 1999, the airport was put to use. The design of airport area represented fully the harmonious theme of the 21st century "man, architecture and environment". Airport buildings consist of 2 parts: airport main building and waiting corridor and 2 connecting channels with the width of 54 m can be found in the green plants. Main building for the airport has a length of 402 m and a width of 128 m.

The upper and lower halls are for checking in and arrival respectively and the middle layer is arrival lane. Waiting Corridor has a length of 1374 m and a width of 37 m with the upper layer as checking in, the middle as arrival hall and the lower as other facilities. The northern half part of main building and corridor is for domestic flights and southern half part for international flights. The whole of airport buildings adopted steel structure rooftop of wide span without a single column, ensuring a spacious and bright environment.

The departure hall has 8 booking offices and 192 ticket counters, able to deal with booking procedures for about 200 passengers simultaneously. In the main building there are also 8 booking offices and 24 ticket counters. In the arrival hall, there are 13 luggage claim turntables. With the airport buildings there is an area of 60,000 sq. m commercial sections, one commercial street of 400 m long, both are open to non-passengers. In the quarantine area there is also "hourly hotel" which can be rented by passengers who are to transfer flights.

The airport has one major flight lane of 4000 m long and 60 m wide, two parallel sliding lanes of 4000 m long and 44 m wide, suitable for the taking-off and landing of the biggest airplanes in the world such as Boeing 747. There are 20 places for embarking the planes and 36 embarking bridges, able to provide embarking bridge service for 36 airplanes simultaneously.

Within the airport there is an area of 800,000 sq. m for 71 airliners, cargo planes and passing planes to land simultaneously. The airport can satisfy the yearly demands of 126,000 taking-offs and landings, 20 million passengers and 750,000 tons of cargo transportation.

Initial support projects of the second-phase Pudong Airport road construction etc. were carried out one after another. The second-phase main project including one new flight lane and one new sliding lane was fulfilled at the end of 2004. The new flight lane is 3800 m long and 60 m wide, satisfying the taking-off and landing requirements of the largest passenger plane of A380 to come out in 2006. The airplane was designed with a focus mode, able to meet the demand of a pillar airport in the Asia-Pacific region and passengers can conveniently transfer planes within the airport buildings.

The construction of Pudong Airport was carried out in the principle of "planning first, constructing phase by phase and developing gradually". After its completion the airport will take up an area of 40 sq. km, with 4 E-level parallel lanes, a total architecture area of 1 million sq. m and 4 unit-mode airport buildings and 200 landing seats, satisfying the yearly demands of 320,000 taking-offs and landings, 80 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo transportation.
