Pudong Maglev
In June 2000, the Chinese government and the German government formally signed the project contract of Shanghai Maglev Speed Train Exemplary Operation Line. Shanghai maglev trains adopted the German technique of speedy magnetic levitation. In the meantime, the project construction leaders' team with the Mayor as its head was set up in Shanghai. In August, 8 enterprises including Shanghai Shentong Group Co., Ltd. pooled the capital of 3 billion yuan to initiate Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd., implementing construction and operation of the project in the enterprise mode. The project took off on March 1, 2001, in July the production base for rails took off and within one year all the rails were produced.

In September 2002 the first train was fixed and modified, and on December 31 the first single-line train with 3 compartments began its trial operation. In September 2003 the operation of maglev trains was thoroughly started and in December the whole line completed its examination and inspection.
The special line of maglev trains starts in the west from Longyang Rd. Station of No. 2 metro line and arrives in the east at Pudong International Airport with a total length of 30 km. With a return journey, the line has 2 stations, 2 major transformer stations and traction transformer stations, 1 operation control center, and 1 train repair center. At the beginning, 3 trains including 15 compartments were in use with the designed top operation speed of 430 km/h and a single journey of about 8 minutes.

The starting station of maglev line is Longyang Rd. Station, situated near the south of Longyang Rd. Station of No.2 metro line. It has an architecture area of 22,400 sq. m and 3-floor framework, with an oval-shaped steel structured dome. The first floor is the large-scale commercial development zone and waiting area for key passengers, the second floor is the central hall and system control room and the third floor is the station with 2 orbits able to station 8 grouped compartments. As the first maglev commercial operation line in China, Shanghai Line will improve the transportation condition from the city area to Pudong International Airport and become a dazzling sight in this modern metropolis.
