Tan Chengnian (谭成年)-A man who realized his dreams
On April 8th, a plane crash killed a famous Chinese figure known as “the first flyer among Chinese countrymen"

Journalists arrived at the scene led by a man named Wang Peidiong (王培东), who was witness to the accident that occurred in his backyard. The site was already crowded with people who flocked to the scene after hearing the loud crash and explosion.

According to Wang, the pilot was dead inside the small broken plane by the time he arrived at the scene.

People immediately dialed 120, but when the ambulance arrived, Tan was pronounced dead at the scene. Another witness told journalist that the plane was flying at a low altitude and seemed to be experiencing technical irregularities before it crashed to the ground. The witness also reported that there were 3 people sitting in the plane.

The pilot killed in the crash was Tan Chengnian, a fifty year old native of China’s Shandong Province (山东省) who earned national fame in 2005, when he successfully flew a plane he built himself.

Tan Chengnian had always been fond of airplanes and flying. Even as a small boy, he dreamt of building and flying his own plane. In 1995, Tan first began conducting extensive research about planes and bought raw materials, but failed in his first attempt.

One year later, Tan made another attempt. The second plane had an airfoil 12 meters long, 2.2 meters high and weighed 300 kilograms. Though it resembled a plane, it wouldn’t fly, but Tan continued in his attempts, refusing to be defeated by failure. Finally, he succeeded in building the third plane, which named “Chengnian NO.2”. He successfully flew it on July 5, 2005, and gained the title: the first flyer among Chinese countryman.

One notable occasion was August, 18, when, in celebration of his wife’s birthday, Tan and his wife flew over the scenery around their home for about 30 minutes, a gift for which his wife was deeply thankful.

He was such an interesting and splendid person. You should know that he was very poor and had no money. He hadn't learned anything until he borrowed money from his friends and then attended a class for the first time. What a great person he is! I do appreciate his diligent. I think he should be respected by all of us.

Some people are sorry to hear about Tan’s death, while others make fun of him. But in my view, Tan should serve as an example to all because he refused to give up before realizing his dream.
